Events of Instruction:
- Instruct students to draw a map of how they get to school each morning.
- Allow students to share their maps
- Gather students for whole group instruction
- Review the definition and purpose of symbols on a map
- Ask students to share examples of symbols that they used on their maps of "How To Get to School"
- Refer to yesterday's activity- creating symbols for all of the classroom objects. Remind students of the list of symbols and meanings displayed on the board during the mapping activity. Define a legend as "a list of shapes and symbols used on a map and an explanation of what each one stands for."
- Ask students why we need map legends; record their responses on a giant sticky.
- Distribute copies of the Busch Gardens theme park map
- Display Busch Gardens park map on board
- Review the map legend of the Busch Gardens Map
- Demonstrate where you would find the first aide station near "France" and the "Griffon" roller coaster
- Instruct students to find and circle the restrooms in "Oktoberfest"/near the castle. Ask for a volunteer to circle the restrooms on the map on the board.
- Instruct students to find and circle the lockers in "Ireland." Ask for a volunteer to circle the lockers on the board.
- Continue to ask students to find and circle various locations on the Busch Gardens Map using the map legend.
- Ask students to work with a partner and find a place on the Busch Gardens map that has not been identified and create a question/challenge for the class. For example- "Find the 'Kid Attraction' in Scotland."
- Allow each partner pair to present their challenge to the class.
- Instruct students to return to their desks
- Distribute the Barefoot Island Map
- Instruct students to design an island map with an accompanying legend. The map should include houses, a hotel, a beach, a pool, a post office, a gas station, and 3 other places of the student's choosing.
Differentiation:
- Allow students to use partners to find locations on the Busch Gardens map
- For ELL students and early readers, provide visual descriptions of objects near the indicated locations on the Busch Gardens Map- for example, instead of simply stating "Find the restrooms in France," ask students to "Find the restrooms in France near the large blue rollercoaster"
- For students who finish early on the Barefoot Island Activity, ask them to come up with questions to ask the class regarding specific locations on their maps. Maps should be colorful and detailed, as well.
Assessment:
- Students will discuss and define "map legends"
- Students will refer to a map legend to find specific locations on a map
- Students will use symbols to create a map with a corresponding legend
