Day 10: Map Construction Day!
Objective:
The student will construct a simple map of a familiar area, using basic map symbols in the map legend (1.5)
Materials:
- Vocabulary Cards- only cut out the terms: Cardinal Directions, Map, Globe, Compass Rose, Legend, Oceans, Continents, and Symbol
- Three-Tab Booklet Template
- Mapping Penny's World by Loreen Leedy
- Giant Post-it Notes
- Markers
- Construction or Card Stock Paper for Foldables
Events of Instruction:
- Instruct students to write a definition or draw a picture showing the meaning of each vocabulary card posted on the board
- Ask for several volunteers to share their pictures and/or definitions
- Gather students for whole-group instruction
- Create a concept map listing the components of a map
- Ask students to share the different pieces that make up a map (Review)
- Read Mapping Penny's World aloud
- Ask students to identify the components of each map in the text
- Direct students to return to their seating groups
- Instruct students to work as a group to choose a place that they all visit frequently and create a map of that area. Provide an example- the cafeteria, the playground, a local park, etc.
- Remind students to include all of the necessary map pieces- symbols, a legend, a compass rose, and a title
- Ask each group to share their map
- Ask students to share several ideas that were the same on each map. Ask students to share several ideas or symbols that were different.
- Demonstrate how to make a three-tab book foldable
- Instruct students to write the following terms on the front of each tab: Symbol, Legend, and Compass Rose
- Direct students to draw an example of each of the terms under each flap
- Ask for several volunteers to share their foldables
- Instruct students to glue their booklets inside their interactive notebooks
Differentiation:
- In organizing groups, pair advanced students with students who may need additional assistance
- For students who may be beginning readers, provide images for the concept map
- Instruct students who finish early to compose another map of their house using the components identified by the foldable
Assessment:
- Students will develop definitions of the following terms: Cardinal Directions, Map, Globe, Compass Rose, Legend, Oceans, Continents, and Symbol
- Students will construct a map using symbols, a legend, a compass rose, and title
- Students will create a foldable defining the major components of all maps
